March 14, 2017The Kakum National Park in the central region of Ghana is a heritage site protecting an original primary rain forest and its varied wildlife. It boasts a famous canopy walk that has attracted thousands of local and international visitors.
The Ghana Heritage Conservation Trust, managers of the Park, engaged Sutherland & Sutherland to develop new attractions to enhance the visitor experience. As over 70% of the visitors are children, a Children’s park was proposed as a key part of the new development.

Facilities proposed include the Children’s park, picnic areas and a food court, butterfly sanctuary, boardwalk, canopy zip line, animal sanctuary, wildlife viewing platforms, tree houses and meeting or retreat spaces under the abundant bamboo canopies. The theme is developed around the use of the local bamboo to create awareness on varied uses of this highly sustainable asset in buildings, artefacts and crafts.
The first phase of the development has been completed as a children’s park. It involved training of local artisans in the craft of working with bamboo for harvesting, treatment, joinery and construction.
As most people hardly see the elusive forest animals, larger than life play sculptures of some of the animals were placed in the park to provide a complement to the canopy walk experience.
