November 9, 2017This five bedroom family residence sits in a plush area in Accra. The existing building was demolished to give way to the new more contemporary structure which would meet the family’s needs and desires to create a welcoming environment in a sustainable way.
They also required outdoor areas where the children could play and where the owners could entertain guests. The design merges the exterior and interior fluidly to create the ambience desired by the client. Outside, the over 40-year-old mahogany tree was preserved in its majestic beauty and has been adorned with a swing for the fun-loving energetic children.
The building itself with its clean lines, use of natural timber for windows and flooring and abundance of windows to let in natural light created a refreshing internal environment.
The interconnectedness of the kitchen, dining and living room provide a great entertaining space and views into the garden and throughout the house giving a transparency which exudes freedom. For sustainability, low flow taps, dual flush cisterns, as well as the installation of solar panels which enable the family to live largely off-grid, were employed. The wide eaves, ventilated roof space and white painted heat- reflecting walls help to cool the interior space.
